Combating Organized Crime: New Directive from the European Union.
The European Union has established minimum rules for managing assets of criminal origin to prevent the spread of organized crime and related illegal profits. The new rules include measures for detecting, tracing, freezing, confiscating, and managing assets of criminal origin.
This directive aims to better equip member states to tackle organized crime and to strengthen national authorities in carrying out their duties. The new rules impose obligations on member states to ensure effective measures against organized crime and the handling of its illegal proceeds.
Under the new regulation, member states must ensure the freezing and confiscation of assets derived from criminal activities, as well as the ability to sell these assets under certain conditions. Additionally, there is provision for the confiscation of unjustified wealth associated with criminal organizations.
The new rules also focus on cross-border cooperation, enhancing asset recovery and asset management services in conducting investigations. The directive addresses the need for coordinated actions at the EU level to combat organized crime and recover illegal profits.
